Where Grid redeems itself is that, whilst it isn’t the most accurate portrayer of realism, there are few games that can top Race Driver for pure excitement and drama. Sure, more people can pick up and play Race Driver this way, but for gamers who wish to push themselves and the car they’re driving to the absolute limit, the vague sense of the ‘rubber meeting the road’ is quite disconcerting, and (from this reviewer’s experience) makes it too easy to make mistakes.Īnd become incredibly frustrated as a result. If Gran Turismo 5 is the Flight Simulator of console racing games, then Grid is the market’s equivalent of Ace Combat.Īs a result, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear of user reviews across the Internet that criticise the game’s ‘floaty’ physics. Let’s not beat around the bush, shall we? Whilst it’s nowhere near as much of an arcade racer as, say, an OutRun or Ridge Racer, Race Driver: Grid is by no means a simulation title. More Arcade than Sim…but does it really matter? And, whilst the whole CEO aspect is no-where near as deep as other racing games (albeit more recent ones, like F1 Online: The Game), sorting out which brands will appear on your collection of track-ready machinery is a novel touch, and the only maintenance aspect that’s worth going back to time-and-time again, given it (unsurprisingly) plays a huge role in the game’s economy. When you’re not racing, though, there’s the team management aspect, which allows you to edit your livery, paint scheme and sponsors, as well as hire a second driver once you progress beyond the ‘Rookie’ stage. Though you start off as a wannabe racer who can only enter events in one-race, target-specific freelance contracts, the grind to bolster up your bank balance with enough dosh to start your own team doesn’t take much time at all, and you’ll be off traversing the USA, Europe and Japan in no time at all, building up your reputation and money as you climb up the ranks. What did make Race Driver: Grid interesting, though, was how your playable character progressed through the ranks and the various tiers of racing, both on and off the track. As far as replayability goes, Grid isn’t exactly the standard bearer for racing games. Neither was its length anything to brag about either – if you restricted yourself to an hour or two a day on Grid, as I did when I played through the game for this Retrospective Review, it would still be possible to complete Race Driver in the space of a couple of months at the most. The question, though, is this: Does Race Driver: Grid still have what it takes to be described as one of the top racing games of the last six years, or has misty-eyed nostalgia tainted our memories and perception of an out-dated game?īy the end of this review, the answer will hopefully be found…Įven when Race Driver: Grid was released, the ‘move your way up the ranks’ progression system was already a career-mode template that had formed the foundations for most racing games, so we’d be deceiving you if we were to say Grid’s campaign mode brought anything radical or new to the genre. With the pre-launch buzz surrounding the upcoming title, though, it’s very easy to forget about its six-year old predecessor: the critically-acclaimed racing game star of the seventh-gen, Race Driver: Grid.Īt least, that’s what most of the folk who reviewed the title in 2008 reckoned Grid was. In just over a week’s time, Codemasters Racing’s much-anticipated arcade racing game ‘Grid 2’ will – after what seems like an absolute age – finally go on sale in the UK. Even worse, every thing is dark including the major roads and geographic boundaries so it is not as easy to reference the location of the radar images. Now if you select the dark background it is gray and not black and the gray is similar to the gray of the radar images so the contrast is poor. It gave good contrast between the background and the radar images while still having a good reference to location. This left an uncluttered black ground with only the bright geographic boundaries and major roads for references. I always turned off the topographic and cities display. On a more personal note I miss my favorite background when viewing the radar of a local site. Has any found a way to change the looping speed? Perhaps I have missed it. And if you think you can make assumptions on whether there is time wasted, you overestimate your own insight into the processes. There’s a lot happening that is required to get the sim running. Looping also can be very slow taking over 30 seconds for one loop and I could not find a way of adjusting the looping speed. Sometimes loading takes longer due to compilation of WASM which is a one-time task, sometimes it might be caused by shader caching etc. If you are not paying attention and wait the minute for it to fully load, you would think there were clear skies across the whole country. In those cases when it is slow to load, the topographical base still loads quickly but it is the radar images that take forever to load. When you click on a shortcut it can load quickly with a normal response time or it can take over a minute to bring up a map showing the lower 48 states complete with the radar images. It has a lot of new features but load times are very inconsistent. In no way did the tight recording schedule harm the album-in fact, it enhanced the live-in-the-studio energy that’s characterized Johnson’s music since the first Dr Feelgood album came out in 1975. That rawness also makes it a fitting coda to not only his career but also to Daltrey's: by finding sustenance in the music they originally loved, they've made a testament to the enduring power of music and how it enriches and strengthens a life.Due to Wilko Johnson’s late-stage terminal cancer, the clock was ticking when Going Back Home was recorded. That velocity is crucial to the creation of Going Back Home it was made with the realization that the clock was about to run out, that Wilko Johnson might not live to see its release. It's tough stuff but it's also enthusiastic, infectious fun, a record of three-minute songs that blazes by in just over a half-hour. In the other, each musician has found a sparring partner who rivals their famed original partner: Daltrey has the gravity and menace of Lee Brilleaux and Johnson hits back with the savagery of Townshend. Roger's lower register is gruff, wearing the scars and weight of his years, while Wilko's guitar slices, pushing and accelerating the beat with alternating precision and recklessness. He's making noise while he still can, and Daltrey matches Wilko's abandon, sounding liberated to be singing songs that aren't racked with Pete Townshend's self-doubt. Johnson penned the handful of originals not long after receiving his terminal diagnosis, but there isn't a shred of self-pity or sadness here. Both musicians are notably older than they were back then - Daltrey doesn't bother reaching for the high notes and Johnson's playing isn't as manic as it was during the Feelgoods - but that's what makes Going Back Home special: neither are bothering to hide their age, nor are they desperately attempting to recapture their youth, they're reconnecting to their roots and seizing the present. Feelgood, 1975's Down by the Jetty, appeared nearly a decade after the Who's 1965 debut Sing My Generation - but the singer is only four years older than the guitarist, so they share many core American blues and R&B influences, speaking a common language from a different perspective. It may seem that a generation separates the two rockers - Johnson's first album with Dr. That twin connection is important, as Going Back Home isn't merely a return to Wilko's roots, it's a homecoming for Daltrey as well, marking the first time in decades that he's sung such tough, blues-based, three-chord rock & roll. Supported by his touring band, Johnson entered the studio with Daltrey and knocked out Going Back Home in a week, just like the Feelgoods and the Who did back in the old days. Feelgood songbook: the hard R&B and rock & roll songs he wrote and recorded in the '70s that continued to resonate decades later. Wilko had a few new originals, plus the idea to cover Bob Dylan's "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window," but he mainly stuck to the Dr. Instead of whiling away his final days, Johnson set out on a final tour and, finding himself still standing at the end of it, received an invitation from Who singer Roger Daltrey to go into the studio and record an album of whatever songs the guitarist wanted. Early in 2013, Wilko Johnson received the news that he had terminal pancreatic cancer and had maybe ten months to live. It shows everything on your agenda for the coming days: scheduled to-dos, repeating to-dos, deadlines, and calendar events. On average, Macs tend to have a longer lifecycle than Windows machines. Read more about Mac computers and gaming. It’s certainly possible to run games on a Mac, but PCs are generally considered better for hard-core gaming. With the number of different systems and the number of users, PCs have better backwards compatibility, that is, you can run older versions of software or operating systems on new hardware. If a particular kind of port is important to you, you can find just the right system with that port. In the hardware area, PCs also have an advantage of offering more connection ports and types of ports on any one system and the ability to select a system based on the number and type connections. Post Modern builds also regularly feature a mix of custom components from Japanese parts manufacturer Easy Riders, for which Jim is the Australian distributor. Jim says the bike will easily get air over speed humps but recommends standing up on the pegs before landing. The rear end has been made rigid by swapping out the springs for solid struts, lowering it by around an inch and tucking the rear wheel up into the fender. He prefers a more comfortable upright riding position so this bike has a wider set of handlebars, giving it the look and handling characteristics of a BMX. The red bike (“Pinko Bastard”) is Jim’s personal ride, which he refers to as a kind of Street Tracker. The stock seat was replaced with a Nitro Heads unit and the bars swapped for Café Racer style, low hanging Clubmans. After the tear down it was treated to a full respray in gloss black. The customer wanted another Blackmail so it’s almost a carbon copy of the original. The black bike is Jim’s most recent build. With modifications like these a Post Modern Motorcycle will haul along at around 90-100kmh at full tilt. The exhaust is debaffled or completely replaced with a hi-flowing system and the carb gets a new set of jets. He starts by pulling out the stock air box and fitting a K&N filter to the carb. While there’s no huge power improvements to be easily gained from the CT110’s engine, Jim unlocks a smidge more grunt by dropping around 5 to 10 kilos of excess weight and by opening up it’s airways. The barrel is also given a thorough clean before being resprayed in engine black and pieced back together. Jim then replaces the piston, ring, cam chain, seals and gaskets and the heads are blasted clean. The engines are rebuilt by removing the side cases, barrel and head. Starting with this platform Jim performs a set of standard upgrades to all of the bikes he builds. Postie Bikes feature a heavy duty gearbox, rock solid heavy duty gauge rims, 3 stands (center, left and right) so they can be quickly parked on any surface and a locking front brake. These versions of the CT110 were designed and built especially for Auspost by Honda and feature a series of special modifications to cope with the day-to-day wear and tear of postal delivery. When Jim started showing people the bike the feedback was unanimously positive and Post Modern Motorcycles was born.Īll of the Post Modern builds are ex-Australian Postal Service vehicles. Soon afterwards he purchased his first Postie and it was transformed into the ‘Blackmail’. He stripped away the stock seat, added some fat rubber and was happy with the result. After a friend suggested he try Postie Bikes as a platform Jim started sketching a few ideas. Back in the early nineties Jim was customising Yamaha SR’s and British bikes under the influence of the Japanese custom scene. Another argument might be to get the releases listed on the composer’s page. But I always was against compromising data quality for tagging needs (see also below), especially as this could be easily solved with the composer field when tagging. One argument might be that artists are well supported in players and music can be easily sorted by artist, and since users want to listen to music of specific composers that makes it convenient for them. I’m personally not sure and never fully understood it. All the release information is incomplete without the composer, and the composer usually appears quite prominently on the cover.įor 2. What are the advantages of putting the composer into the title? What are the downsides?.What are the advantages of crediting the composer as an album artist? What are the downsides?.So for me the following questions would need to be answered: If that’s true, we can let the “only use the dedicated composer field” go down the river. There seems to be some general agreement here that the composer of a work for classical is so important that it deserves some special handling. Hence I propose the rule to put the composer at the start of the album title, followed by a colon.” has some flaws When I started to read your comment I was originally assuming you were arguing against the composer in title. Putting several data into one field is the biggest mistake. Just wanted to point out that an argument chain like “There is already a special field for composer. Again: all the other artists besides the ONE album artist should be mentioned on the track level, not the album level. THAT is inconsequent, isn’t it? My argument is to do it the same way as well with only one one composer AND to use the composer tag as intended (on the track level) AND to not cramp the composer into the album artist field AND to restrict the album artist field to just one name for structural reasons regarding the folder structure that music softwares generate. IF several composers are mentioned on the cover, THEN MusicBrainz already advises us to suddenly put them into the album title nevertheless: “Beethoven: Symphony No. They can easily mentioned at the track level for each track, but don’t appear in the album title if not mentioned on the cover. To make it even clearer: Sometimes you have additional composers on an album, who aren’t mentioned on the cover. That’s the same as printing Dollar bills without mentioning “Dollars” only saying “100” – 100 what? There are dozens of ninth symphonies from dozens of composers. Now you can say: “See, the composer AND the album title!”, but I say the composer IS part of the album title, because you don’t even have an album title when it only says “Symphony No. Look at any classical album you want: There is always the composer mentioned with the work(s). MusicBrainz tries to re-invent the wheel here instead of just complying with best practices … Oh, and dare you to call MusicBrainz an “Encyclopedia of recorded music”? “Mess of recorded music” would be a better fit …Įdit: And I’m in tune with Apple Music and the rest of the classical music industry, exhibit 1 is the aforementioned document (look who has co-authored it!). And voilà: automagically audio players will handle classical music like it is meant to be presented, just like Apple Music does, but most others I’m aware of, too. That is what I propose: to give everyone their own field in the database, as there are equivalent tags for them as well. Same with say a violin concerto: here the soloist takes the main attention, the conductor and the orchestra fade into the background (=artist field). Because which orchestra he conducted in this particular release isn’t as important as the fact that HE conducted. The second bit is of course “Karajan” as THE one and only Album Artist. Two because there cannot be an album tag with just 9th Symphony – from whom? It must be “Beethoven: Symphony No. Of course you could ask further to gather more information, but these TWO, not three bits of information are essential. You ask: “What’s that?” The answer will most certainly be like: “Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Karajan.” – And you have all you need in a short sentence. Imagine you enter a friend’s room and classical music is playing. The composer has his own tag, so why cramp him into the album artist field? “Oh, but you can write a script to pull it apart again as it is supposed(!!!) to be separated by a semicolon from the other album artists, which are divided between themselves by commas!” … except when they aren’t, like in the sort album artist field. It becomes inconsistent and you have to force your contributors to obtain certain rules of filling in fields. The biggest sin one can make with databases is to put several different things into one field.
